Intro

Welcome to Talaera Talks, the business English communication podcast for non-native professionals. My name is Paola and I am co hosting the show with Simon. In this podcast we’re going to be covering communication advice and tips to help express yourself with confidence in English in professional settings. So we hope you enjoy the show!

00:24

The ability to communicate effectively will not only get you hired, but it will also help you get a promotion, succeed throughout your career. And it really doesn’t matter what industry you’re in, effective communication will help you get there. And, actually, if you look at job postings from 2020, communication skills is actually one of the most common ones. And with an ever more globalized world, you’re actually not only competing with the people around you in your area, or in your country, you’re competing at an international level. And the thing is, if you’re not a native speaker, you know, we understand that struggle.

01:04

Welcome to Talaera Talks, the business English communication podcast for non-native professionals. My name is Paola, and I am co-hosting this show with Simon. Hey, Simon, how’s it going?

01:16

Hey, Paola! Very good, thank you. I’m really excited to start this show with you today.

01:22

So am I! So, Simon, can you tell us a little bit what we’re covering here?

01:26

Yeah, absolutely. So with Talaera Talks, we’re going to be discussing real world challenges for non-native speakers. And we’re going to provide advice on how to navigate these challenges. So things like getting your point across in meetings, engaging in small talk, and introducing yourself professionally or explaining complex information when you lack the vocabulary.

01:51

Yep, that’s right. That actually sounds pretty good. And I think it’s also important to highlight that we will give these actionable points, very useful learning strategies to perhaps remember vocabulary or improve pronunciation or those words that are quite special for native speakers. And I would say, before we get down to to business, Shall we introduce ourselves a little bit?

02:18

Yeah, that’s probably a good idea. Um, yeah, I’ll tell a little bit about myself. So as I said, my name is Simon and I am coming to you from my small apartment here in Odense, Denmark. So I’m currently studying my master’s degree in Human Resource Management, where I focus on intercultural communication and organizational learning and development. So I’ve been really lucky to grow up in an international environment with dual citizenship. So I’ve had a lot of exposure to different cultures. And this eventually led me to teaching English and living in Turkey, Vietnam and Saudi Arabia and now working as a communication trainer with Talaera. So this I mean, really, this has been a great way for me to work with so many different people from all over the world, I think, so far with Talaera. I’ve worked with over 50 different clients from over 16 countries, I think, so… Yeah. I mean, for me, you know, I really feel lucky to be able to work with so many experts in their own field on improving their their English. But, uh, anyway, that’s enough about me. How about you, Paola?

03:37

Oh, that sounds very cool. So thanks, Simon. I would say I’m talking to you from my small apartment in Valencia. But I just moved. So I’m among boxes. That’s what I’ve been doing the whole week – boxing and unboxing. But anyway, I’m here in Valencia, in Spain, and I’m also a business English instructor at Talaera. And I’ve actually been teaching communication, I always say, ever since I can remember. And I have mixed languages with psychology, the psychology of work, leadership, strategic management… Those are topics I’m super excited about. And I try to build that a bit into the sessions we give with business English communication. I think it has to do a lot with psychology. And well, for the past 10 years, I’ve led a fairly nomadic lifestyle. I don’t know if that will continue, but I’ve also lived and worked in, in the US, in Belgium, Vietnam, Berlin, Spain… I cannot even remember.

04:35

I know that feeling. I know that feeling.

04:38

Yeah, so, should we give a little bit more background around Talaera and what we do?

04:45

Yeah, absolutely. So, you know, regarding the why, as to why we’re doing this. At Talaera we focus with helping non native professionals from all over the world and from some of the biggest multinational companies to smaller businesses, from executives to lower level employees… Basically, everyone that’s a non-native Business English speaker, we help them to communicate effectively in an international environment in English.

05:14

Yeah, exactly. And I always remember Gloria, this character from Modern Family, she’s a Latina living in the US, and I remember when she said, ‘Do you know how smart I am in Spanish?’ And I think that’s the gist of what we do – we help those very capable professionals shine, so to say, in English as much as they would do in their mother tongue. And it’s that tailored kind of session and training where we help you say the words you have in your head, and you just don’t know how to express them in English.

05:52

Yeah, absolutely, and communicate that in a way that gets your point across and communicate that in the way that you really had planned out to. And yeah, I mean, I think after the pandemic started, you know, we’re all working from home, we’re all working remotely. And we’re looking for ways to help people improve their English communication skills from home, right. So we started our free webinar series which, Paola, you’re actually taking the charge in. And so tell us a little bit about that. How’s that going?

06:24

That’s going amazingly well, we started in April, it started as a project to, you know, to give something to people for free and for them to learn from home. We’ve got over 5,000 signups since then! That’s pretty crazy. So yeah, I hope you get to do one as well.

06:42

Absolutely. Absolutely. And and, you know, that kind of led to us starting Talaera Talks and and we wanted to really offer something that you can listen to from anywhere, anytime. You know, I listen to podcasts all the time. It’s basically my number one way of how I learn now – it’s through podcasts. And we wanted to basically offer that as well. And that’s how this was born.

07:08

Yeah, and I am so excited about this!

07:11
